I Live in an Art Project
Created by a woman I’ve never met
Morning light yells “get up! This art project isn’t done yet.”
As the earth turns and this home in a city sheltered ravine awakes
Shadows on my walls reveal contrast
The source of art and appreciation
I live in an art project
By a woman I’ll never meet
An artist, gardener, a thinker
A tinkerer in the membrane between vivid perception
And foggy creativity
She dug into life and wrung beauty out of pain
To look like Wisteria tendrils twirling upward
With ends reaching high
And into another artist’s life
Sitting on her overgrown patio
Loosens up my sticky feelings
My regret fixtures
And uncertainties about my role in lives others today
I live in an art project
By a women I just met
Through her forest of magnolias, dogwoods, and cedar
What did I do to deserve such a good mentor?
I met her in cream-colored petals, soft leaves,
and endless shades of green
I met her in the twilight hour in the radiance of her old lamps
When the white, cracked walls get quiet and absorb my thoughts
And I can see I am a continuation of an awesome art project
